Types of Birthmark

There are two main types of birthmarks: pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks.

Pigmented birthmarks

These types of birthmarks happen when you have more pigment in one part of your skin. It’s like a spot on your skin. The types of pigmented birthmarks are:

Moles

If you were born with a mole, it is considered a birthmark. People often call these birthmarks “traces of beauty.” But not all moles are birthmarks. Mole tends to be small, round brown spots, but sometimes it gets bigger and becomes different in color. They can be pink, skin color or black. Some are smooth; others have raised bumps on the skin.

Cafe-au-lait spot

Colour of these spots is kind of light brown when they’re on light skin. Dark skin may have black coffee color. They may be large or small, usually elliptical. The spots may fade with your age, but they may not vanish.

Mongolian spots

These types of spots are a kind of gray-blue. They tend to be darker in color on the back or the bottom of the children. They can be like bruises. Sometimes they fade away, but sometimes they do not.

Vascular birthmarks

Sometimes a bunch of extra blood vessels will clump together, and you can see this cluster in your skin. Thus this is called a vascular birthmark. The different kinds of Vascular birthmarks:

Salmon patches

This indicates the level and type of pink or red (such as salmon). If you get them on your face, people call them “Angel Kiss.” If you have them behind your neck, they are called “stork bite.” Sometimes they fade away, but sometimes they do not.

Hemangiomas

This birthmark is usually harmless. There are two types: the ones that appear on top of your skin and the kind that is deep in your skin. The above is called strawberry hemangioma because they are bright red and look like fruit. Deep hemangioma is blue-violet, the surface uplift. This kind shows up after a baby is born. In the first year, the both types are getting bigger, and it looks a bit horrible for parents. Most hemangiomas remain flat at the age of 10, many will be flat or even earlier. They may leave the back of the light marks.

Port wine stains

These markings usually appear on the face, it is of pink, red or purple colour. They don’t go away on their own and can get bigger as kids grow.

Cost of Treatment

Each Birthmark is different and requires a different number of treatment sessions. It is hard to predict the exact number of sessions a person needs as it depends on the location, size, and extent of the birthmark. In general cost of Birthmark Removal varies from $100 to $600 per treatment session depending on other factors and one geographic area to another.

Procedure

The method used to remove birthmarks includes laser surgery or surgical incision, depends on the type of birthmark, his condition, the severity of the place, and if it causes symptoms, pain. However, the laser is a common treatment in this process. It relieves certain areas of the skin, even out of a patient’s skin tone, making them less noticeable. As the laser penetrates the surface of the skin, it lightens the dark area. In the case of coffee and cream birthmark, laser treatments help to eliminate the mark completely. It usually requires several treatments to remove most Port-wine stains and hemangiomas (“Strawberry Scars”) because the laser only penetrates a short distance into the skin.

Laser treatment sounds severe but is actually very sophisticated. These measures include the use of light waves in which the specific coloring is somewhat customizable like a broadcast sound of a particular frequency. During several treatments, the laser breaks down the coloration so that the mark fades and blends with the surrounding skin without leaving any scars.

While absolutely safe, laser therapy can be a bit uncomfortable, though not intolerably so. When necessary, the anesthetic cream applied before treatment to minimize any inconvenience.
